Program Description: Since the report of Herbst and Bern of cancer in young girls exposed to the pharmaceutical diethylstilbestrol in utero, rapidly accumulating evidence suggests that a broader range of synthetic chemicals disrupt hormonal function and thereby contribute to disease and disability across the lifespan. This evidence has been codified in reports by the Endocrine Society, the International Federation of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, the United Nations Environment Program and the World Health Organization. Studies in humans show remarkable consistency and affirm initial laboratory studies, particularly for neurodevelopmental toxicity of flame retardant and pesticide exposures, obesity and diabetes as well as male and female reproductive conditions. The costs of these exposure have been documented to be 163 billion Euro/year in Europe and $340 billion/year in the US. Exposures to these EDCs are preventable, with health and economic benefits that are substantial and may outweigh the costs of safer alternatives.
